Protecting & Expanding Immigrant Rights
SCUUJA started the Immigration Action Team in 2025 in response to the current national administration's push for the widespread removal of undocumented immigrants from USA in many ways--some of which challenge due process and the rule of law in the country.
Our work includes:
Monitoring proposed laws regarding immigration in the SC legislature
Partnering with the ACLU of South Carolina to offer a Know Your Rights training specifically for congregations. This training covers what to do if ICE comes to their church, as well as how congregations can work to support immigrants
Promoting the printing and distribution of Red Cards, which summarize the rights of immigrants in multiple languages. Many of our congregations have been distributing these in their communities
Supporting congregations who "adopt" an immigrant or refugee family, both providing material goods and offering accompaniment to immigrants as they navigate the justice system
Legislation to Watch
As of May 2025, the immigration related bills have not made it out of committee.
The two negative bills we are following are:
H3169 Increase Penalties for Undocumented Immigrants Driving Without a License: in Judiciary
S128 Show Proof of Citizenship for Voter Registration: in Judiciary
